An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Management Accountant to join a high-profile charity, based in Exeter, on a 6-month Fixed Term Contract. The main purpose of the role is to support the Head of Finance in the development and maintenance of policies/procedures, work with the Finance team to ensure the company complies with the Charity Commission Governance Code/other legal or statutory requirements, and assist with maintaining the finance ledger function. The successful candidate will be Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies (CCAB) qualified, part qualified, or have equivalent expertise through study and experience.

Responsibilities include: -

  • Develop and produce reports, analysis and evaluation for the Director and Senior Management Team to present at the Board and its sub-Committees in order to provide assurance that financial planning and budgetary controls are on track and to demonstrate mitigation is in place for any identified risks
  • Ensure liaison with all departments within the charity and Trading Company to ensure financial documentation is received accurately and in a timely manner
  • Work closely with the Finance Officer, allocating and supervising work to make sure that in a small team all members’ skills are used and the team operates efficiently together
  • With the Finance Officer, manage the work of more junior team members, allocating work appropriately, ensuring they are completing tasks as required
  • Extract transaction information from the bank account and various systems in the organisation such as Fundraising, Lottery and Shops to ensure records are accurately uploaded and recorded
  • Help produce month-end cost centre reports and alongside the Head of Finance meet with department managers in order to inform of current levels of spend and track against budget
  • Assist the Head of Finance in producing the schedule to meet with department managers to undertake the annual budget setting process in order to ensure accuracy and affordability for the following year
  • Assist in overseeing the payroll function in order to put in place the necessary controls and checks that ensures all employees are paid accurately and on time
  • Help to implement, maintain and apply appropriate financial controls in respect of financial transactions and cash handling to prevent any potential areas of fraud
  • Assist the Head of Finance in completing and delivering operational information/payments to HMRC, National Statistics and other government and regulatory bodies to ensure legal and statutory requirements are met

Requirements: -

  • Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies (CCAB) qualified, part qualified, or equivalent expertise through study and experience
  • Evidence of continuing professional and personal development
  • Significant experience of working in an accounts team, including maintaining purchase and sales ledgers, preparation of accounts to trial balance stage
  • Significant experience of preparing management accounts
  • Experience of managing others
  • Detailed understanding of purchase and sales ledgers, intercompany accounts, and reconciling bank accounts
  • Detailed understanding of preparation of management accounts
  • Understanding of how to prepare budgets
  • Understanding of VAT, HMRC, payroll regulations and statutory accounts requirements
  • Planning and organisational skills
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Highly developed IT skills including Excel
  • Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • A solution-focused approach and strong team player
  • Able to be flexible as work dictates, especially around month-end deadlines
