Up to £60,000 DOE | Hybrid Working, one day per week from home | Bridgwater

Cathedral Appointments is recruiting on behalf of a well-established and successful group of businesses in the construction sector, operating across the South West, for an experienced Group Accountant. This is a senior appointment, taking ownership of financial management and reporting across the group and working closely with the directors as the businesses continue to develop.

The Role

The Group Accountant will lead an established accounts team, deliver accurate reporting for each business in the group and strengthen financial controls, forecasting and reporting procedures. The role suits a commercially minded finance professional who is technically strong, organised and confident in spotting where systems and processes could work better, and who enjoys being close to business decision-making.

Responsibilities for the Group Accountant:

  • Prepare quarterly management accounts for each business and monthly performance reports covering turnover, gross profit, overheads and profitability.
  • Analyse performance against budgets, forecasts and prior periods, giving directors clear and timely information to support commercial decisions.
  • Lead annual budgeting and forecasting, and build cash flow forecasts across the group, monitoring working capital, debtors and creditors.
  • Manage and reconcile intercompany transactions, balances and recharges, resolving any discrepancies promptly.
  • Oversee VAT returns, CIS compliance and payroll administration, and liaise with external accountants on year-end and statutory obligations.
  • Manage the accounts team and the day-to-day running of the purchase ledger, sales ledger and general accounting, reviewing workflows and introducing improvements.

Requirements for the Group Accountant include:

  • Proven experience as a Management Accountant, Finance Manager or in a similar role.
  • Strong management accounting, reporting, budgeting, forecasting and cash flow skills.
  • Experience of intercompany transactions and reconciliations within a multi-company or group structure.
  • Experience managing or supervising a small accounts team, with a sound grasp of financial controls.
  • The ability to explain financial information clearly to non-financial directors and managers.
  • Good working knowledge of accounting software, ideally Sage or Xero, and strong Excel skills. ACCA, CIMA or ACA (qualified, part-qualified or qualified by experience) and construction sector or CIS experience would be advantageous.

Benefits:

  • Salary of up to £60,000 DOE, plus a discretionary bonus scheme.
  • Full time, Monday to Friday, with one day per week working from home.
  • Private medical insurance, death-in-service benefit and company pension.
  • A senior position with genuine ownership of the finance function and direct involvement with the directors.
  • A supportive environment with an established accounts team.
  • On-site parking.

If you are a commercially minded finance professional ready to shape a finance function and make a visible difference to a growing group, we would love to hear from you.

Note on Sponsorship: We regret to inform you that at this time, we are unable to offer sponsorship for work authorisation for this role. Therefore, candidates must possess valid authorisation to work in the UK without requiring visa sponsorship.
