Up to £80k | Full Time / Part Time | Exeter City Centre 


We are delighted to be working in partnership with Exeter Cathedral on the appointment of a Chief Financial Officer.  As a key member of the Senior Management Team at Exeter Cathedral, you will leverage your financial expertise to collaboratively drive the execution of their business plan. Leading the finance team, you will ensure they achieve their objectives and fulfil the organisation's requirements. Your role involves demonstrating strong leadership, maintaining financial governance, and ensuring compliance with regulations established by the Charity Commission and the Association of English Cathedrals. 

Chief Financial Officer responsibilities include: - 

  • Interpret and communicate financial data to key decision makers, providing financial appraisals and using spreadsheets effectively
  • Implement and maintain robust financial controls, processes, and procedures; oversee annual budget preparation, financial forecasts, and performance monitoring
  • Manage treasury and cash, review investment portfolios, and ensure accurate and timely preparation of annual financial statements and audits
  • Support risk management strategies, develop the annual operating budget, and ensure compliance with financial and statutory regulations, including the Charities Act and company law
  • Advise on financial aspects of new projects, develop internal audit programs, and provide monthly management reports to the senior management team

Chief Financial Officer requirements include: - 

  • Qualified chartered or certified accountant with strong strategic financial management skills and a hands-on approach 
  • Extensive charity, commercial, and business experience, including managing multiple income streams in a complex environment 
  • Knowledge of legal and regulatory frameworks for charitable organizations and strong organizational skills 
  • Exceptional communication skills for conveying financial information to non-financial managers and strong IT skills, including proficiency with SAGE Line 50 and SAGE Payroll 
  • Ability to handle high-pressure situations, make critical decisions, and demonstrate excellent performance management skills, with empathy for the Cathedral's core values
