Cathedral Appointments are delighted to be working in partnership with Hearts Together on the appointment of a Chair of the Board of Trustees.

About Hearts Together

Hearts Together is a charity based out of Plymouth that provides accommodation for patients, carers and relatives when receiving medical treatment or visiting a loved one in the hospital. They offer a range of practical, financial and emotional support services to help those dealing with complex challenges including end-of-life and emergency care. Originally founded as a hearts-based charity, due to the increased need for their services, they have extended the support to a variety of treatments and now support 7,500 guests every year. The charity employs 11 staff and 4 self-employed counsellors, who work alongside the CEO. They are aiming to expand their facilities with an £11.5M project as part of their five-year plan.

The role of Chair is a key appointment for Hearts Together and will require an experienced Chair/Trustee who is motivated by the Charities purpose and who has a passion to support the future growth. The Chair will have a keen interest in shaping future plans, be able to horizon scan and effectively mobilise new opportunities as well as having an understanding of the strategic, legislative and political environments that affect and influence their work.

The Chair will also act as an ambassador for the Charity and help to build constructive alliances, taking an active role in engagement with key stakeholders. The Chair leads the Board of Trustees ensuring that it fulfils its functions in providing a strategy and effective governance for the Charity. The Chair will support, and where appropriate, respectively challenge, the Chief Executive and ensure that the Board works closely with the management team to achieve agreed objectives enabling Hearts Together to fulfil its purpose, ensuring maximum impact for its beneficiaries.

Time commitment: In addition to quarterly board meetings the Chair will have regular meetings with the Chief Executive, and also represent the Charity at various events and meetings with key stakeholders.

Remuneration: The role of Chair is not accompanied by any financial remuneration, although expenses for travel may be claimed.

Insurance: The Chair of the Board of Trustees is covered by the charities Indemnity Insurance.

Terms: The Chair (and board members) are appointed for a three-year term with eligibility for reappointment. The candidate should not have any interest which may conflict with his/her ability to perform fully the role of Chair.
