An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Management Accountant to join a long-standing organisation based in Newton Abbot. Reporting to the Central Team Leader, your main role will be to prepare management accounts, coordinate the monthly closedown of the financial ledger, reconcile the balance sheet accounts and assist with the preparation of the annual budget. The successful candidate will be part qualified ACA, CIMA, or ICAEW or equivalent (relevant experience will be considered), and have some previous experience of working as an accountant in a small/medium charity, corporate environment, or in an accountancy practice.

This is a permanent, part-time role, working 28 hours per week across 4 days, and offers a blend of home and office working.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the monthly closedown of the financial ledger so that it forms a reliable basis for preparing the management accounts and financial returns
  • Ensure that recharges, accruals, and prepayments are identified and posted in line with accounting principles
  • Prepare the management accounts for submission to the managers in the central departments, which will include Income & Expenditure, Balance Sheet, Cash flow, and commentaries
  • Reconcile the balance sheet accounts and prepare control account schedules to identify and resolve discrepancies and outstanding items
  • Support the Finance Manager in preparing the annual budget, forecasts, and rolling 3-year plan
  • Assist in the preparation of some of the schedules for the year-end statutory report pack, which may include the financial returns for the organisation
  • Assist in the maintenance of the investment ledger, ensuring that on a monthly basis, portfolio valuations are accurately recorded and analysed to the individual funds, with movements and distributions analysed appropriately
  • Maintain the integrity and the completeness of the financial coding structure of the organisation, ensuring that it facilitates the financial management reporting and the statutory reporting requirements of the organisation
  • Maintain the control log of users and master file changes in the system, ensuring that access rights accord with responsibility and authority
  • Ensure that batch journal interfaces (such as investments and BACS) are posted and processed correctly in the General Ledger, and discrepancies are resolved
  • As guided by both the Finance Manager and the Team Leader, take responsibility for designated aspects of the new finance system implementation, which will provide a good knowledge base for the future
  • Fixed Assets accounting – Assist with the maintenance of the Central unit Fixed Asset Registers in accordance with the organisation’s policies, ensuring that additions, disposals, depreciation, and the WIPs are reconciled and posted in the General Ledger
  • Payroll – working with the Finance Team Leader maintain an overview of the organisation’s payroll process, and be prepared to act as backup for the monthly input and processing should the need arise

Requirements:

  • Part Qualified ACA, CIMA or ICAEW or equivalent (relevant experience will be considered)
  • Some experience of working as an accountant in a small/medium charity, corporate environment, or in an accountancy practice
  • Some experience in preparing management accounts and an understanding of working with budgets and cost centres
  • The ability to present and communicate some financial information in a user-friendly manner
  • Organisational skills with a proven track record of identification and managing priorities, meeting deadlines, and excellent personal time management
  • Highly computer literate with the ability to understand internal processes and the systems used to manage the accounting function effectively
  • Experience of using Microsoft Excel to intermediate level
  • Honest and open approach with high levels of integrity
  • Good communication skills, personable, with the ability to build a rapport and gain the confidence of a wide variety of people
  • Inclusive approach developing and encouraging teamwork in staff and professional advisors
